Venerable Tengyur
Ven. Lonsang Tengyur was born in Rolawling, Nepal in 1973. At the age of 11, he was admitted to Kopan Monastery in Kathmandu by Lama Zopa Rinpoche, who had a very close spiritual connection with the people of the region.
He received his monk’s ordination at Kopan, Nepal in 1984, and later received his novice ordination from Geshe Lhundup Sopa, who was a professor at the University of Wisconsin, in 1986. In 1998 he received the full Gelong (Bhikku) ordination from His Holiness the Dalai Lama at Bodh Gaya, India.
He undertook both secular and religious education at Kopan from 1984 through 1994. In the same year, at the behest of Khen Rinpoche Lhundup Rigsel, he traveled to Sera Jey Monastic University, South India to pursue higher studies in Buddhist religion and Philosophy. Since then, he has undergoing rigorous training and study as part of Geshe program at the Monastery. In 2012, he successfully completely his formal study in the five great treatise according to Gelugpa tradition. Till date, he has delivered public lectures at various places in South India.
He is currently, based at Sera Jey Monastery and will become Geshe next year.
