Our Review Sessions
On the first two days (July 28 – 29) of His Holiness’s teachings on Chapter 9 of Śāntideva’s A Guide to the Bodhisattva’s Way of Life, we will hold sessions from 4:00 – 5:30 IST to review His Holiness’s talks.
On Saturday and Sunday (July 30 – 31) we will have two sessions per day to delve in detail into the text, verse by verse.
Santideva’s Chapter on Wisdom
Śāntideva’s classic text, Bodhisattvacaryāvatāra (Tib. Byang chub sems dpa’i spyod pa la ‘jug pa, Eng. Engaging in the Bodhisattva Deeds), is widely renowned as the most extensive and clear Indian commentary on the bodhisattva practices of compassion, ethical discipline, patience, joyous effort and concentration. The ninth chapter differs significantly from the rest of the text, focusing in depth on the philosophy of emptiness. Many teachings on Śāntideva’s text do not cover this chapter in detail, but during this course we will focus on it exclusively. Śāntideva carefully follows Nāgārjuna’s Mādhyamaka system and presents it in a practical, concise manner conducive to meditation.
Tsongkhapa considered Śāntideva to be among the few followers of Nāgārjuna, along with Buddhapālita and Candrakīrti, to interpret the master’s philosophy unerringly.
During this short course we will examine how this classical philosophy is relevant in light of modern questions on the nature of self and the relation of body and mind.
