Calm & Focus: A Peaceful Mind Through Meditation

with Venerable Drolma

July 6 – 16 (Plus Bonus Day for Sponsors on July 17)

This is an intermediate course, suitable for students who have attended one of our 10-day Introduction to Buddhism courses or have taken the full online program, The Buddhist Path of Training the Mind and Going Deeper: The Buddhist Path of Training the Mind.

Please join us for an online course on how to develop the practice of Calm Abiding meditation.  Calm Abiding (shamatha in Sanskrit) is the practice of developing a calm, clear and focused mind. This practice is essential if we are to subdue our agitated and unruly mind and to make our mind flexible.

During this course we will learn and practice calm abiding meditations using the following objects of focus:

  • breath (full-body, abdomen and nostrils)
  • object (photo of a Buddha or other inspiring being)
  • mind (settling the mind in its natural state)
  • no object (awareness of awareness)

We will also be talking about some techniques to work with different obstacles to being able to sit still and meditate.  We will learn about the stages of developing Calm Abiding and finally we will discuss how to integrate our meditation practice into daily life.

Most of the class will be spent in practicing meditation with the various objects.  There will also be time for asking questions about your individual practice.

About Tushita

Tushita is a centre for the study and practice of Buddhism from the Tibetan Mahayana tradition. We're located in Northern India, in the forested hills above the town of McLeod Ganj, Dharamsala - the seat in exile of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama.

Tushita aims to provide a friendly and conducive environment for people of all nationalities and backgrounds to learn about and put into practice the teachings of the Buddha. With this in mind we offer regular drop-in events and courses on introductory Buddhist philosophy and meditation, as well as intermediate level courses and group retreats for more experienced students.
