Developing the Fearless Heart: The Answer for Today’s Troubled World

with Venerable Lhundup Jamyang

September 14 – 19 (Plus Bonus Day for Sponsors on September 20)

This course is open for beginners and experienced students alike!

All sentient beings have Buddha nature: the potential for complete wisdom and compassion.

The world is in turmoil. After many years being encouraged to chase a level of beauty, health, and happiness that was not achievable for most people, we are now confronted with sickness and loss of lives, jobs, and businesses. Both the chasing for success and the threat to life and livelihood facilitate a self-centeredness that closes the heart for others. We react in this way in an attempt to protect ourselves from suffering. What it really brings is loneliness, the feeling of separation and being cut off. All sentient beings have Buddha nature: the potential for complete wisdom and compassion. As human beings, due to our intelligence, we have the capacity to develop this potential. By realizing how we are all dependent on each other, we can open our heart for other sentient beings, and experience our true nature and our humanness.

To connect with our true nature and to leave behind the loneliness of the self-centered mind we need to make a radical shift in our mind. We need to understand how our way of thinking and behavior contributes to our own suffering. We need to investigate the nature of our chasing mind and how we can find freedom from the sufferings of this world. By understanding that we are all connected with each other and that by nature we are all the same, we can find the courage to reach out to others. Once the fear for opening the heart is overcome, we can find connection, love, and compassion, expanding and moving beyond our imagination.

In this course we will explore how to take care of ourselves and others in a healthy way. You will learn how to counteract fear and our emotional disturbances. We will discuss methods to generate loving kindness and compassion for others, based on compassion for oneself.

Teacher

Ven. Lhundup Jamyang was born in the Netherlands in 1961, and worked for 12 years as a physiotherapist with children. In 1997 she came into contact with Buddhism at Tushita Meditation Center in Dharamsala. It was here that she realized she had a strong connection with Lama Zopa Rinpoche. In 2000 she took ordination at Kopan, after which she went to Australia to study the 5-year Basic Program at Chenrezig Institute. In 2007 she went to Buddha House, Adelaide, where she worked as SPC and teacher. In 2009 Rinpoche advised her to study the Madhyamakavatara, which was taught at Istituto Lama Tzong Khapa, Italy, as part of the Masters Program. She completed the MP at the beginning of 2017, including the one year retreat requirement. She is co-writer of the study manual for the Madhyamakavatara, and has been painting thangkas for over 20 years.
