Losar is the Tibetan New Year.
It is also the first day of the auspicious period of 15 Days of Miracles, which culminates on the full moon day of Chötrul Düchen.
Losar is a very family-oriented holiday, so usually there aren’t any formal public events in town on this day. In fact many of the shops and restaurants may be closed for a few days as Tibetans stay home with their families and visit temples to make offerings. This is a good time to visit the Main Temple in McLeod Ganj!
At Tushita we will offer a special program on Losar and the following Days of Miracles.
On Losar we also honor the anniversary of our FPMT founder Lama Yeshe’s passing away in 1984. Zopa Rinpoche requested all FPMT centers to offer an extensive Lama Chöpa with Tsog. In addition, Rinpoche recommended that centers start the tradition of telling stories about Lama Yeshe every Losar to keep his memory alive, for example, by inviting older students who knew Lama to share their favorite stories, or by watching video or reading published stories of Lama Yeshe.
