The Science of Happiness Through Meditation

with Venerable Legtsok

May 30 – June 5  (Plus Bonus Day for Sponsors on Saturday, June 6th)

This is an intermediate course, suitable for students who have attended one of our 10-day Introduction to Buddhism courses or have taken the full online program, The Buddhist Path of Training the Mind and Going Deeper: The Buddhist Path of Training the Mind.

The Science of Happiness Through Meditation is a seven-day course that will guide participants through learning and regularly practicing 6 basic meditations: meditation on mindfulness, impermanence, gratitude, loving kindness, compassion, and selflessness or emptiness. The course will begin and end with a simple self-evaluation to help participants see if they’ve gained any tangible benefit from the meditations. This is an opportunity for participants to make a small experiment in their lives.

In the past 30 years there has been a huge increase in the amount of scientific research done on happiness or mental well-being, and also on various forms of meditation. Today, these two closely related fields are rapidly growing and having far reaching impacts on education, business management, personal health, and medical treatment regimens. Thereby, much wisdom of ancient contemplative practices is being validated and re-interpreted to suit our modern circumstances.

Many studies show that by doing just 30 minutes of meditation per day, 4-5 days per week, for 8 or more weeks there is clear evidence of improved emotional, cognitive, and physical well-being. Such results are measurable through both observations of brain function, immune system markers, and psychological evaluations. In order to give interested people a chance to check for themselves whether they can likewise benefit from meditation, we are offering this course drawing from ancient Buddhist teachings and techniques, and modeled loosely on practices used in proven research.

Teacher

Venerable Tenzin Legtsok is in the sixteenth year of the Geshe Studies Program at Sera Jey Monastic University in South India where he studies classic Indian Buddhist treatise and their Tibetan commentaries in the tradition of ancient Nalanda University. For more, see Ven. Legtsok’s full bio.
